Bjornstjerne Bjornson, the Nobel Prize winner for Literature in 1903, was the torchbearer and singer of the Norwegian national independence movement, the founder of Norwegian literature, and a pioneer of the feminist movement. Literature was where he assumed his social responsibility. He nationalized Norwegian drama through a series of plays and novels, he depicted the true Norwegian rural life and customs in the novel, and he created many vivid images of the peasants.
