Starting from the question “What is the dictionary user’s standard to select or ignore certain information in processing bilingual dictionary entries?”, this article focuses on two major dictionary compilation entities: the user and editor. Based on the theories of cognitive lexicography and “the dictionary as communication”, it integrates the communication theory of dictionaries into the framework of u ostension-inferenceof the Relevance theory and then analyzes the ostensive process of the editor and the inferential process of the user. It argues that what the user selects in using a bilingual dictionary is information that has contextual effects and relevance.
