The “Forced Pigtail Cut” in the Early Republic of China Seen in Shenbao

民国初年,在媒体的大力宣传下,"剪辫"因其所象征的种种进步含义,成为了新国民形象的外在表现和拥护革命与思想进步的标志。然而,由于不少保守民众仍旧抗拒剪辫,致使某些地区的革命政府和部分激进的革命党人不惜采取强制手段剪辫,造成了诸多不良后果,在一定程度上为后来保守势力的反扑埋下了伏笔。有鉴于此,各地政府在强迫剪辫风潮发生之后立即采取相应措施进行限制和补救,避免事态进一步升级。

In the early Republic of China,with the publicity of media,“pigtail cut”,which symbolizes progress,becomes a projection of a new national image and a symbol of supporting the revolution and having progressive ideas.However,the resistance of a few conservative people to have their pigtails cut leads to the forced pigtail cut practiced by some revolutionary governments and radical revolutionaries,which to some extent foreshadows the later counterattack of the conservatives.In view of this,the local governments take immediate countermeasures to avoid the worsening of the situation.
