A Probe into Hino Tsutomu in Xinjiang from His Travels in Yili

19世纪中后期以来,日本加紧了对我国西北地区的探察和渗透。1906年,日军少佐日野强奉命来华,其主要目的是刺探我国西部、特别是新疆地区情报。在新疆期间,日野强一方面积极地与当地官民交流唱和,另一方面也和俄、英驻疆官员进行了接触。从总体上看,日野强的新疆之行是日益膨胀的日本以"东洋盟主"自居,企图"雄飞海外"的一次重要的探索性行动。

From the middle to the late 19th century, Japanese successively penetrated into Xinjiang to steal intelligence. In 1906, the Japanese Major Hino Tsutomu was dispatched to China, with the main purpose to spy on intelligence in the western part of China, especially in Xinjiang. On the one hand, Hino Tsutomu actively communicated with the local officials. On the other hand, he contacted the Russian and British officials stationed in Xinjiang. Anyway, Hino Tsutomu's trip to Xinjiang was an important act of Japan's attempt to expand beyond Japan.
