乔利深刻体会弱势群体的生存状态,以不动声色的叙事揭露了强权化的二元观念非此即彼、非友即敌的残酷。《斯科比先生的谜语》批判了护士长为代表的强权文化,展现了以斯科比为代表的老年群体的生存危机;《皮博迪小姐的遗产》赞扬了身处逆境却彰显人性光辉的作家霍普威尔;《可爱的婴儿》赞颂了青年知识分子为自由和理想所进行的努力和拼搏;《代理母亲》剖析了当代知识分子在感情和事业被边缘化的尴尬处境。乔利聚焦弱势群体,赞扬了弱势群体追求平等自由、捍卫人格尊严付出的努力,彰显了生命意识和平等尊严之上的人性张力和人生审美。
Due to her rough life experience and hard writing career,Elizabeth Jolley has a deep-felt understanding about the living conditions of the disadvantaged groups.Mr.Scobie's Riddle criticizes the hegemonic culture represented by Big Nurse and reveals the survival crisis of the elderly group represented by Mr.Scobie;Miss Peabody's Inheritance focuses on the writer's vulnerable state and praises Mrs.Hopewell,a writer who is handicapped but perseveres and inspires her readers immensely.Foxybaby focuses on the weak state of young intellectuals and publicizes the hard work for freedom and ideals by the disadvantaged groups.The Sugar Mother focuses on the dilemma of middle-aged Professor Edwin and analyzes the embarrassing situation of contemporary modern intellectuals being marginalized in their feelings and career.Jolley focuses on and raises people's concerns about the living conditions of the disadvantaged groups,and challenges the concept of hegemony through many novels,while praising the efforts of the disadvantaged groups to pursue equality and freedom,defending the dignity of the humanity,and demonstrating the ethnic tension and morality beyond the living consciousness and equal dignity.
