In the novel Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant,Anne Tyler portrays three American women living in the 20th century, including Ruth,Pearl and Jane characterized by their respective traditional idealized femininity, masculinized and androgynous features. She denies the long repression and persecution resulted from such factors as traditional convention and cultural customs, and expresses the probability for the modern women to be independent on their personality, thoughts and spirit. As a result, the reflection on the traditional idealized femininities, and the exploration on the construction of the modern androgyny are fulfilled. She also points out that androgyny can break through the traditional binary opposition between men and women, and it plays an important role in helping individuals adapt to the society, realize their self-value,build harmonious relationship between the two genders and so on.
