As the only civilian official in the Song Taizong Dynasty who served as the Privy Council Chief Executive, Shi Xizai played an important role in the early Northern Song Dynasty politics. But records about him are seldom seen except his biography found in The History of Song Dynasty, and other historical documents among which Shi Xizai’s epitaph details his personal affairs, his family lineage, his official experience and literary achievements. Hence the epitaph can be a supplement for the insufficient historical document. Based on the records of official history, textual research on the epitaph, combing Shi Xizai’s family lineage and migration, can fill in the blank of Shi’s family research in the Northern Song Dynasty. This article, which explores the conditions for Shi Xizai to serve as a Privy Council Chief Executive under the background of emperor Taizong’s avocations of civil rule and “restraining military affairs by means of literature”, provides first-hand information for the study of civil service on the military posts in the early Northern Song Dynasty.
