Pasternak was an outstanding Soviet poet and novelist in the 20th century. His poetry and prose makes for a great deal. His novel Doctor Zhivago is a masterpiece of review and reflection of history, violence and the call of humanity. The novel describes a series of important historical events before and after the October Revolution, and the protagonist Doctor Zhivago's attitude and response to these historical events. In the Soviet Union, the novel was condemned and critical. But in the western world, it was highly appreciated, and it was awarded to the Nobel Prize for literature by the Swedish academy of arts, which created a firestorm in the Soviet Union, and evolved into an international event called the Doctor Zhivago Incident.
