Rodney Hilton (1916-2002) is undoubtedly a leading figure in Marxist historiography and one of the most outstanding historians in the field of medieval economic and social history. In his various works, Hilton studies peasants and rural society, class relations, peasants resistance and rebellions, the “prime mover” of the development of medieval feudal society, and the transition from feudalism to capitalism. He also investigates medieval small towns and cities and made unique contribution to the study of urban history. His historical research has enriched and deepened our understanding of the medieval history of English peasants and society, and promoted the development of new social history and Marxist theory.
