in the 1980s,the management of the publication of martial arts novels was one of the most important concerns of policy-makers.For traditional martial arts novels, the combat and negotiations between administrators and publishers led to the transformation of “academic publishing” as a “middle-ground” that contributed to both the more convenient administration by the state and the possibility for the more flexible market activities. However, for the new-style martial arts novels imported from Hong Kong and Taiwan, the lack of such middle-ground resulted to the state's extensive intervention. The publishers, meanwhile, sought to legitimize their business through their reinterpretation of the state’s policy and principle. The negotiation between the two reveals the ambiguity of the administration's self-identification in an era of rapid transformation.
