Although curfew had long existed, the curfews in the Song D ynasty had been the least strict one since Tang. The night order of urban public space of Song Dynasty was mostly sloppy. In the early days of first half of the Song Dynasty when curfew was comparatively strict, sometimes city gate was opened unlawfully, some officers broke the rule of curfew , and there was the practice and regulation that the officers breaking the curfew would be escorted home by the patrolmen. Nevertheless, ordinary people feared the order of curfew. While the curfew in capital cities experienced the process of being strict to being loose, the practice of curfew in local cities was diverse, with historical records full of generally loose curfews and breach by official and civilians. The revelry continued throughout the night in such festivals as the Lantern festival ( shang yuan jie ), and night markets were prosperous and popular, which was an important indicator that the urban public space in the Song Dynasty was very active.
