From the Poetic Wisdom to the Ideal of Authenticity——The Interpretation of Taylor and Vico's Path of Modernity

Charles Taylor summarized the dilemma of modernity in his The Ethics of Authenticity as three malaise: individualism,instrumental reason and the loss of political freedom,while he found the ideal of authenticity worth pursuing in those malaise.But Taylor did not specifically discuss the Interpretation and the specific contents of that ideal. Vico investigated the poetic wisdom and human generality of primitive gentile nations,and distinguished between two areas of knowledge in his The First New Science.With returning to the roots of modern concepts such as individuality and nationality proposed by Vico,analyzing poetic wisdom and common principles,the analysis of the relationship between Taylor's ideal of authenticity and Vico's poetic wisdomwould show a possible way to the real Authenticity.
