In Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales, the female characters’ speech acts like logical discourse, silence, gossip and curse axe ways for them to express themselves and search for an identity. Chaucer, though living in the misogynistic fourteenthcentury English society, has strong sympathy for and gives serious consideration to women and their fate.
