As one of the three metafunctions of language,interpersonal function plays a significant role in language communication and interpersonal interaction.Researching its application in state of the union address is beneficial to understanding political speech.This paper analyzes the interpersonal function in Trump’s 2018 state of the union address from the perspective of mood,modality and person.It aims at revealing underlying meaning of the speech and Trump’s purpose.
