A Comparative Analysis of Modality Strategy in English Abstracts from Prestigious Chinese and International Medical Journals

以概率情态为例,采用统计分析与文本分析相结合的方法,对比了国内与国际核心医学期刊英文摘要在情态承诺、情态责任以及情态配置上的异同。研究发现在情态承诺表达上,两类摘要差异显著,而在情态责任表达和情态配置关系上两者较为相似。两类摘要情态策略的异同与摘要作者习得概率情态成分的语言实践、母语文化的影响以及期刊学术传统的差异等因素有较大关系。

The present study,adopting mixed methods of statistical analysis and textual analysis,made a comparative analysis of how modal constituents expressing probability(abbr.probability modality)are used in English abstracts from prestigious Chinese and international medical journals.Specifically,the study compared how modal commitment,modal responsibility and their configuration are expressed in English abstracts of Chinese medical journal with that of their international counterparts.The results show that the two groups of abstracts differed significantly from each other in expressing modal commitment,but had much in common in expressing modal responsibility and in the configuration of modal commitment and responsibility.The similarities and differences between the two groups of abstracts in modality strategy could be attributed to abstract writers’learning experiences of probability modality,the journals’academic convention,the influence of Chinese culture,and more.
