Spring Festival, which falls on the first day of the first lunar month, is also known as Chinese New Year. For Chinese, it is as important as Christmas is to Westerners. In the old days, many Chinese pasted New Year's paintings on the doors, walls and/or windows of their houses to usher in the festival. It was widely believed the paintings would bring good fortune, ward off evil spirits and prevent calamities. Nowadays, inheritors of New Year's paintings have dedicated their lives to promoting and developing the traditional crafts.
