Shen Peng of Noble Quality:Take Weng Tonghe's Letter to Taishishu as the Clue

本文以翁同龢家藏《致太世叔函》为线索,厘清了该函作者沈鹏由常熟到京城在翰林院苦读细节,以及翰林院诸生的构成及苦读状况;并阐述沈鹏成为编修后仗义执言,不顾生死的壮举。在慈禧等守旧势力发动戊戌政变后,他大胆上书,为光绪皇帝鸣不平,要求朝廷改弦更张,严厉惩处军机首辅荣禄、军机大臣刚毅以及太监李莲英等"三凶",因而遭到清廷及两江总督鹿传霖等人的残酷迫害,必欲置其于死地而后快。最后,由于外人干涉,清廷虽然被迫提前释放沈鹏,但由于他长期饱受折磨,出狱不久便与世长辞。

Taking the clue of Weng Tonghe's Letter to Taishishu, we clarify author of this letter Shen Peng' s experience and details which study in Hanlin academy from Chang shu to the capital, and the composition of Hanlin academy students and their hard studying status. This paper also expounds Shen Peng' s heroic act of speaking out from a sense of justice and regardless of death after he became the Compiler of the Second Class. After Empress Dowager Cixi and other conservative forces suppressed the Hundred Days' Reform, he wrote boldly, fight for Emperor Guangxu. He requested the court to change policy, and severely punish Rong Lu, Gang Yi and Li Lianying these uthree evil". As a result, he was brutally persecuted by Lu Chuanlin and others, and in the hope of putting him to death. Finally, due to foreign interference the court was forced to release Shen Peng ahead of time, but because of the long ordeal, he died soon after he was released from prison.
