A Chinese Consul in Malaya during the Late Qing Period:A Cross-Regional Study of Liang Biru and His Family

梁碧如(1857—1912)是清末中国驻马来亚槟城的第四任领事官,他的任期是从1903年至1907年。梁碧如出生于广东梅县,19岁南来谋生,以开矿致富,行善闻名。他的一生大部分时间在南洋度过,也在槟城病逝和安葬。但他和家乡的联系从没有中断。本文以梁碧如及他的家族为焦点,讨论他是如何维系自己和家乡的关系,以及如何搭建马来亚和中国的家庭网络。这种跨地域的活动和联系,甚至在他逝世后,由他的妻妾和子嗣继续维持。

Liang Biru(1857-1912)was the fourth Chinese Consul in Penang,British Malaya,and his tenure was from 1903 to1907. Liang was born in Meixian,Guangdong province,China. He came to Southeast Asia to find a fortune at the age of 19. He got rich through tin mining and gained fame through charity. He spent most of his life living in Southeast Asia and eventually died and was buried in Penang. However,he had never lost contact with his hometown in China. This article focuses on the relationship between Liang in British Malaya and his relatives in China and discusses how he constructed a close link between his own family in Malaya and his home village in China. This cross-regional connections continued even after his dead and was carried it out by his wife and his descendants.
