精神孤独是麦卡勒斯作品永恒的核心主题。《心是孤独的猎手》展现了个体孤独心理的运行机制:个体在孤独中虚拟构建理想自我,创造虚拟的"个性化上帝",最终因虚拟世界幻灭而加剧孤独。麦卡勒斯的"孤独美学"既与中国传统的"孤独美学"异曲同工,揭示生命的真谛,又对现代工业文明进行反思,并提出警示。

Spiritual loneliness is the eternal central theme of McCullers’ works. The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter shows the mechanism of individual spiritual loneliness: the individual constructs the ideal self in loneliness, creates the virtual "personalized God", and eventually, the loneliness is aggravated by the collapse of the illusory world. The lonely aesthetics of McCullers not only coincides with the traditional Chinese "lonely aesthetics", revealing the true meaning of life, but also gives out an alarm after a reflection on the modern industrial civilization.
