Edward Munch, a Norwegian painter, is one of the major representatives for expressionism painting at the turn of the 20 th century. In his paintings, death is one of important thematic motifs. Without death, Munch cannot be explored clearly. Death is presented by Munch not to be of fears and worries, but to be of cries of the humanity, struggles against death, loneliness and difficulties in life. In his paintings about the death, desires for the future and brightness could be viewed obviously. Associated with Munch' s personal experiences ,this essay attempts to discuss his paintings in light of his contemporary painters' works, hoping to find our Munch' s own interpretation of death.
