A New Textual Research on the Prototype of Xiao Yunxian in The Scholars

《儒林外史》塑造的萧云仙人物特征较为复杂,表现在侠客、武将、循吏三个方面,而循吏是其重要典型特征,从这一特征出发可以考证出卢道悦为其主要生活原型。吴敬梓熟知卢道悦生平事迹,将其作为书中人物原型符合其创作习惯和思想主旨,对这一原型进行改造并创造出具有典型意义的人物形象亦充分展现其创作艺术。

The characteristics of XiaoYunxian portrayed in The Scholars are quite intricate,which are manifested in three aspects: a chivalrous man,a military general and an upright official,among which the last one is very distinct. Based on this feature,Lu Daoyue can be proved to be the main prototype of Xiao Yunxian. Wu Jingzi,the writer of The Scholars ,was familiar with Lu Daoyue’s life story and using him as a prototype in the book is also in line with his creative style and ideological purpose. Wu’s successful reconstruction of this prototype and creation of this typical image have in turn exhibited his creative talent.
