A Study of Guan Gong′s Credibility and Moral Excellence Based on Romance of the Three Kingdoms

关公之所以能够成为中国历史上唯一的贯通儒释道三教的神祇,与《三国演义》的流行密不可分。《三国演义》极大地助推了关公正面形象的形成和传播。从《三国演义》看,关公的诚信理念和美德主要表现在:不虚言,说老实话;不玩虚,办实在事;不轻诺,言出必行;不做作,表里如一;不凌弱,诚实不欺;不阿谀,尊崇高人;不自大,诚心待人;不投机,照章办事。关公的诚信理念和美德,主要受到个人文化素养、结义兄弟和社会的影响。

The reason why Guan Gong became the only God in Chinese history that penetrated the three religions of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism is that Guan Gong is closely related to the popularity of Romance of the Three Kingdoms . From the perspective of Romance of the Three Kingdoms , Guan Gong′s honesty and virtue are mainly manifested in the following aspects: never speak in vain, be honest;never play virtual, do everything authentically;never make promises lightly, put words into practice;never be assumed, be the same outside and inside;never bully the weak, be honest and never deceive;never flatter, respect the talents;never be arrogant, be sincere to others;never seize a chance to seek private gain, do things according to the rules and regulations. Guan Guan′s idea of honesty and moral excellence were mainly fostered by his personal cultural cultivation, sworn brothers and the society.
