This paper is a further discussion and analysis of two historical arguments and perspectives mentioned in The Oxford History of Western Music by Richard Taruskin. One is about the historical position of the medieval period in European/Western music history, the other is the relationship between oral tradition and“text”in medieval music practice. It aims to point out the particularity of European music culture rather than its universal features, and touch upon some essential characteristics of Catholic Europe as the source of modern Western civilization.
