What Prevents Them from Becoming Better Women? On the Function of Chinese Women in Society and Family

中华人民共和国成立以来,在政治、经济、文化、科技、教育等各条战线上涌现出大批优秀的女性人才,她们为中国的经济发展和社会进步作出了不可磨灭的贡献。然而,与占半数的女性人口基数相比,我国优秀女性人才仍然偏少。从中国女性在社会和家庭中的不同作用、社会角色与家庭角色的冲突入手进行分析可以发现,正是传统社会的性别观念造成了女性社会参与的困境,制约了女性社会作用的发挥,同时在传统社会性别观念的规训和影响下,女性自觉不自觉地作出了以家庭为主的现实选择,从而导致大批普通中国女性未能脱颖而出,并湮灭于柴米油盐的日常生活中。

Since the founding of New China, a great number of outstanding female talents have sprung up in various fields such as politics, economy, culture, science and technology, education, etc. They have made indelible contributions to China s economic development and social progress. However, compared with half of the female population base, China s outstanding female talents are much rare. What are the factors that prevent them from becoming better women? Starting with the different functions of Chinese women in society and family, the conflict between social roles and family roles, this paper points out that it is the traditional gender concept that causes the dilemma of female social participation and restricts the full play of female s social role. At the same time, under the discipline and influence of the traditional gender concept, women consciously and unconsciously make the realistic choice based on the family, which leads a large number of ordinary Chinese women to fail to stand out and annihilate in the routine life cooking and cleaning.
