《红楼梦》中形象较为完整的侠客主要是倪二和柳湘莲。程高本中,倪二由市井义侠蜕变为无赖泼皮,柳湘莲的人生悲剧也修改为仅因误会所致。这对脂批本的初衷有所偏离。这种偏离有意识地遮蔽了他们的侠客身份,模糊了侠客的身份危机。这种续写与改动总体上掩盖了明清文化转型期的种种文化思潮的复杂性,试图营造太平盛世的幻象。这有悖于曹公的原意。

In A Dream of Red Mansions , the most complete images of chivalrous men are NI Er and LIU Xianglian . The Cheng Gao version transformed NI Er from a chivalrous man to a scoundrel, and the life tragedy of Xianglian was only due to misunderstanding. This is somewhat different from the Zhi version. This deviation consciously masked the identity of chivalrous men, blurred their identity crisis. This kind of continuation and alteration generally concealed the complexity of various cultural trends of thought during the cultural transformation of Ming and Qing Dynasties, and attempted to create the illusion of peaceful and prosperous times.
