In Idylls of the King,Tennyson makes a little alteration to the conventional ethics of courtly love,namely changing the target of knight’s love from lady to maiden. The alteration may seem slight,but it is significant:it demonstrates the purport of the poem,that is to condemn the fornication between Lance' lot and Guinevere,to castigate people caring for nothing but lust,to laud fidelity and chaste of both sexes, and then to call for the reconstruction of social ethics.
