在吴汝纶由桐城派大儒向近代学者转变过程中,报刊成为其获取西学新知、了解时局动态的重要途径之一。吴汝纶将阅报视为国人因应"变局"的一个重要手段,力倡封疆大吏和地方官员支持与推动报业发展,其本人也身体力行,积极投身报业实践。他既主动与报人交往,也曾尝试开办报馆,更希望借此实现融汇中西、经世致用的人生理想。

In the process of Wu Rulun's transformation from a scholar of Tongcheng School to a modern scholar, newspapers and periodicals was one of the important ways for him to acquire new knowledge ofWestern learning and understand the current situation.Wu Rulun regarded reading newspaper as an important means for the Chinese to cope with the "changing situation". He actively advocated leading cadres and local officials to support and promote the development of the newspaper industry, and he also actively participated in newspaper practice. He took the initiative to communicate with reporters and tried to start a newspaper. He hoped to realize the ideal of integrating Chinese and Western cultures, and putting what he had learned into practice.
