This article tries to articulate about Milarepa written by French writer Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt in 1997. As a“récit”, it conforms to the reception history of Milarepa, a Tibetan great saint, in France in the 20th century, but Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt didn’t portray Milarepa as the traditional description of the saint, he created a new one instead. From the perspective of narratology, it can be found that there are noticeable cross- culture characteristics in his work. The author started his writing by picking out“hatred” from the story of Milarepa and combined it with the“dream”of a French man named Simon, and then continued his story with a strange woman, which is a typical narration of western writers. However, it is Buddhist samsara that pushes the work forward. By interleaving of intra and outer level of narration the work illustrates the progress of Simon’s spiritual enlightenment and creates a totally new“Milarepa”.
