Functionality: Modern Interpretation of the Cultural Characteristics in Japanese Traditional Architecture

在日本传统建筑现代化转型的过程中,现代主义者对日本传统建筑文化特质进行了现代解读,这对于日本传统建筑与西方现代建筑的融合起到了关键作用。文章以神社、住宅、茶室作为日本传统建筑的代表,分析在现代主义语境下日本传统建筑的文化特质及其建筑体现,并追溯其形成的渊源,发现功用性的特质是日本传统建筑现代化转型的起点和基础。

On the eve of encountering western civilization and starting the modernization of architecture in Japan, there’re cultural characteristics inherited from the primeval ages in Japan’s architectural tradition, as well as cultural characteristics which could match the spirit of western modern architecture. In the course of modernization, the interpretation of the cultural characteristics of Japanese traditional architecture in the modern perspective played a key role in the integration of Japanese traditional architecture and western modern architecture. Taking the shrine, residence and teahouse as the representatives of Japanese traditional architecture, this paper analyzed the cultural characteristics of Japanese traditional architecture in the context of modernism, and traced the origin of its formation, and found that functionality was the starting point and basis of the modernization of Japanese traditional architecture.
