The Sound and the Fury is one of the most creative works of William Faulkner, the Nobel Prize winner as well as the representative writer of southern renaissance. It is in this novel that Faulkner, for the first time, probed into the racial issue. This paper analyzes the racial relationship between the white characters and black characters in this novel from the perspective of cultural study and text analysis. This paper points out that in terms of hosting status, white people and black people have changed their position under the new historical background: in this novel, black people gained agency and controlled white people' s life to a certain degree, overturning the traditional master-servant relationship between the white and the black. This change foretells the future of the racial relationship in American South and contains Faulkner' s best wishes for a democratic and equal racial relationship.
