Research on Engraved Tally of Qin and Han Dynasties

刻符之"符",是指秦汉时期应用最为广泛的"竹质符",并非是指《阳陵虎符》一类铜质兵符;刻符之"刻",是指竹质符上用之于合契的"刻齿",并非是说符上的文字是用刀锲刻出来的;刻符即"刻符书"之省,是秦及汉初之人对各类竹质符上的"具文"——手书墨迹的统称。

The " tally" of engraved tally refers to the most widely used " bamboo tally H in Qin and Han Dynasties, not to the copper tally of " Yangling Hufu". The " engraving" of the engraved tally refers to the ” engraved teeth" which used in the bamboo tally to tally with the other part , not the words on the tally being carved with knife. Engraved tally is short of " engraved tally script", and it is the collective name of the handwritten script on all kinds of bamboo tallies in Qin and early Han dynasties.
