French Impressionism in the 19 th century marked an important turning point in Western art history. It inherited and advanced traditional realistic painting, and was also the beginning of modern art. With its unique optics and chromatics, it created a different visual perception, and enriched people’s visual experience, thus having influenced modern art tremendously. This article discusses impressionism from a variety of perspectives to illuminate its momentous role in art history.
