Diderot’s art criticism was at the budding stage of modern art criticism, and Diderot himself is acknowledged as one of its founders. His criticism which suggests rationality and practicability in the Age of Enlightenment is more insightful than today’s art criticism characterized by using indiscriminately philosophical terms and applying mechanically art theories. What is the most valuable in Diderot’s art criticism is exactly what is missing in art criticism of today. Despite dramatic changes that have taken place in art criticism nowadays, his art criticism is still of significance to the development of contemporary art criticism. Despite dramatic changes in art form since his day, his criticisms remain beneficial to contemporary art criticism. The author seeks to address the contemporary significance of Diderot’s criticism in light of its two features: constructing critical discourse by directly facing works, and constructing new values between intuition and concepts.
