The author focuses on the period between 1888 and 1934, during which the thoughts of formalism in art history began to rise, and sketches the developing process of formalism of Vienna School of Art History and its features, thus explaining the position of this school in the development of the whole thoughts of formalism in art history. In this article, the author suggests that both the origin and maturity of formalism thoughts of the school were earlier than those of the British critic, Roger Fry;it was W?lfflin and Riegl who pushed formalist art history to its peak. Therefore, the Vienna School of Art History made spectacular contribution to formalist art history.
