As narratology moves from a classical to a postclassical period, rhetorical theorists of narrative cease to focus exclusively on n arrative per se,and begin to pay in creasing attention to the cultural and historical dimensions of narrative communication. However, the modestly adjusted rhetorical model still prevents us from uncovering the multifarious connections between literary texts and their contexts.I thus propose in this essay a cultural rhetorical model of narrative theory, which regards narrative as a cultural production and studies its various communicative features in broad sociocultural contexts.I also use Edgar Allan Poe's "Ligeia"as a case study, analyzing its aesthetic design in connection with conditions of the literary marketplace in the early nineteenth century,in an attempt to demonstrate the validity and value of the approach in literary interpretations.
