摘要
《影子乡村》是美国当代著名作家彼得·马修森创作的一部长篇小说。小说受到美国评论界的高度赞誉,并赢得了2008年虚构类作品美国国家图书奖。小说以20世纪之交佛罗里达州农场主爱德加·华生的一生为原型,通过不同视角和众多不同声音,重塑了一个充满悲剧意味的华生形象。本论文试图在呈现华生充满暴力的一生的基础上,着重从种族主义视角来探究造成华生悲剧的历史根源,并由此揭露美国种族主义如何既给黑人也给白人自身带来了双重毁灭性影响。
Shadow Country,which has won high acclaim from American critics,is a 2008 National Book of Fiction Award novel by the famous contemporary American writer Peter Matthiessen.Based on the life of Florida sugar plantation owner Edgar Watson around the turn of the 20th century,the novel reshapes the tragic image of Watson from many angles and in many voices.By presenting Watson with a life of bloody violence,this paper focuses on exploring the historical roots behind Watson's tragic life from the perspective of racism,exposing the double devastating effects of racism in the United States on both the blacks and the whites.
