从谷歌地图上看太湖的地貌,像一个巨大的C字形,周围是3.65万平方公里的环太湖地区,江南先民的家园。新石器时代晚期的崧泽文化,得益于这片独一无二的环境,在距今5500年前后突然加速了文明的进程,为后世这一地区的图像样式构建了基本框架。从马家浜的浜到崧泽的泽,再到良渚的渚,环太湖区域沿海滩涂和沿河沼泽湿地勾勒出一个大环境,河道纵横、洲沚连连,.河口水岸有丰富的食物资源。
