The apocalyptic-age mood was the collectively emotional response of the literati of the late Qing dynasty facing to the western invasion, the influx of foreign cultures and the collapse of traditional culture. In the face of the fierce and turbulent social environment, the breaking and colliding cultural context, and the alternation of tradition and modernity, they were impassioned and indignant, running for the cause of the nation;or despondent and indulgent;or independent from the world, concerning about nothing. No matter holding any one of those positions, they endured both the country's decay and the uncertain future of their own. Comparing to those with the first two positions, those holding the last one position acted silently and seemed to be negative, while silent pain tends to be more profound. Chong Yi, the Mongolian poet, was one of them.
