A Review and Outlook for English as a Lingua Franca within 30 Years

英语通用语的研究可追溯至20世纪80年代,到21世纪初成为热点话题。英语通用语30余载的发展历程分为注重语音词汇研究、理论与应用研究、多重语境研究三个阶段,每个阶段均取得一定的成就,同时也有不同的特点和不足。英语通用语是一个全新的研究视角,展望其今后的走向和可能取得突破的领域,为进一步拓展研究提供明确的方向。

The study of English as a lingua franca dates back to the 1980s and has not become a hot topic until the 21st century. This paper divides the over 30-year history of ELF into three stages, followed by summaries of achievements, characteristics of each stage and weak points. Yet, ELF is a brand-new research topic, whose future research direction is worth expecting. The study then makes some predictions about the directions in which ELF is likely to move forward and the areas in which breakthrough is likely to be made.
