According to Margaret Atwood,“Survival”is a general theme in Canadian literatures,so the problem of survival is embodied in her works. In her two future novels The Handmaid’s Tale and Oryx and Crake,there are various problems of survival such as women’s survival in the patriarchy,the survival of the colonized in postcolonial society and the fate of human beings in the future,etc. As a responsible writer,Atwood strives for the construction of the national identity of Canada,struggles for the rights of the oppressed groups and expresses her anxiety about the fate of mankind in the future world of environmental deterioration.
