Being regarded as an idealistic and patriotic poet, Rupert Brooke’s poems have been taken as the romanticized and beautified glorifiers of the war. In Brooke’s battle hymns, death remains the subject of his morbid obsession. From the perspective of Freud’s two instincts, it is not patriotism but the poet’s death instinct that is implied behind The Safety and The Soldier in Brooke’s poetry 1914 and the historical biography of the poet.
