Initial Application of Electrotyping Copper Plates in China’s Publishing and Printing History

在中国近代出版史和印刷史中电铸铜版的使用具有重要意义。电的应用进入中国,最早是服务于出版印刷领域,电铸(镀)技术在印刷制版领域的应用即具有典型性。本文通过史料钩沉及参考宁波华花圣经书房、上海美华书馆使用电铸铜版的典型出版实物,梳理了电铸(镀)技术在中国出版印刷应用的缘起和过程。

The use of electrotyping copper plates in the modern publishing history and printing history of China is of great significance.Electricity found its earliest application in China in serving publishing and printing,typically seen in the application of electrotyping(plating)technique.This paper examines the origin and process of applying electrotyping(plating)technique in China’s publishing and printing industry through checking historical materials and referring to the typical publications by The Chinese and American Holy Classic Book Establishment in Ningbo and The American Presbyterian Mission Press in Shanghai with the use of electrotyping copper plates.
