美华书馆的六种中文活字在中国出版史上发挥过重要作用。本文就其中的二号(柏林)活字产生之背景与起源、订购与制造过程、使用与改善等问题进行探讨,以期阐明其中主要人物与事件之进程,以及汉字元素在这一进程中的作用与影响。

The six kinds of Chinese types of The American Presbyterian Mission Press have played a key role in China’s publishing history.This paper probes into the creation background and origin,ordering and manufacturing processes,use and improvement of No.2(Berlin)types in the hope of defining the key figures and the processes of related events,and the role and influence of Chinese characters in the processes.
