As a subject in the establishment of Chinese character system,pictophonetic characters have the strong capability of forming characters.Ideographic signs and phonetic signs are two fundamental elements of pictophonetic characters.Ideographic signs function as representations of the character’s category and scope.Phonetic signs function as representing sounds,but also hold the role of expressing meanings.Consequently,this essay focuses on the meaning of phonetic sign.It discusses the number of meanings that phonetic signs can represent,as well as the relationship between the phonetic sign’s meaning and pictophonetic character’s meaning.
