Absrtact: Faust is Goethe’s masterpiece and his spiritual autobiography. Goethe creates Faust’s tragic image by combining realism with Romanticism and using contradictory methods in the arrangement and description of characters and scenes. Faust’s tragedy reflects Goethe’s thoughts, experiences and feelings throughout his life. Faust is a representative work of personality liberation in the Western Renaissance. It reflects human’s yearning for and pursuit of an ideal society. It is also a reflection and perception of the ultimate value of life. Faust’s characters contain more emotional content. By analyzing Faust’s tragic images from the perspective of self-awareness, we can get more secular inspiration and understand more of the spirit of the human era.
