Identity is one of the most important motifs in Kazuo Ishiguro’s novels. In his novels, Ishiguro examines characters’ different modes of identity, including national, diasporic and human identity, etc. There are two tendencies for the construction of identity: reconstruction of new adaptative identity and strengthening of original primary identity. National identity is one of the most important primary identities. The protagonist Masuji Ono in An Artist of the Floating World is an artist growing up in the pre-WWII-Japan, who, along with the political and economic development of Japan, from utilitarianism and aestheticism to patriotism and militarism, gradually constructs his Japanese identity. Through Ono’s construction of Japanese national identity, Ishiguro reflects on both the positive and negative sides of patriotism, revealing enlightening significance for issues like patriotism and national identity in a global era.
