Lily is a common flower in China. Yet in ancient Chinese poetry literature, the images of lily are much less in number than other flowers such as plum, clove, chrysanthemum, etc. It is usually appeared as plain description or the depiction of scenery background without fixed symbolic meaning. The fixed image of lily was formed slowly in ancient Chinese culture. Meanwhile, the frequency of lily’s appearing in ancient literature is far less than that after modern times, and is in stark contrast with “lilies” in Western culture. Its final definition of “pure”,“noble”,“great love” and other symbolic meanings in Chinese culture is gradually formed after being influenced by western culture in modern times.
