Searching for Cryptic Beauty, Entering the Wonderland: A Review of Hu Xiaozhen's The Southwest in Ming-Qing Literary Imagination

胡晓真先生《明清文学中的西南叙事》是台湾大学哈佛燕京学术丛书中的首集。该书将"西南"作为代表华夏边缘的文化符号,以有别于中国古代"杂文学观"和西方"纯文学观"的"大文学观"为指导,运用诗文、小说、戏曲等传统文学样式,"新史料""非信史"在内的史志以及文本空白处等多元材料,通过内外、正反等视角,考察明清时期西南地区的本土文人及逐臣、边吏、过客、移民对其地的记叙,并强调从文字书写中所透露出的作者的内心世界。同时,探寻"边缘"西南与封建统治"中心"的互动关系,以此来建构更加全面的中国文学。

The Southwest in Ming-Qing Literary Imagination by Mr. Hu Xiaozhen is the first volume of NTU & HYI Academic Book Series. It takes the southwest as the cultural symbol representing the border of China. Under the guidance of "great literary concept" which is different from ancient Chinese "heterogeneous literary concept" and Western "pure literary concept", using multiple literature forms like poems, novels and operas, etc., and multivariate materials such as historical books including new and unchecked ones and blanks of texts, and from different perspectives, the book studies the records of southwest China by native literati, banished vassals, frontier officials, passing travelers, and immigrants, and emphasizes the inner world of the authors revealed by the texts. At the same time, it also seeks the interaction between the southwest border and the center of Feudal States to construct a more comprehensive Chinese literature.
