In English literature, ancient British ballads are a form of poetry. They cover such topics as folk legends, social history, cultural customs and traditional superstitions, which have high social and cultural values. By analyzing their themes, the paper finds that ancient British ballads reflect a typical tragic complex. More concretely, they fall into the topics of “love”,“war”,“politics” and “hero”. Analyses show that these prominent features are closely related to ecological environment, economic form, national history and cultural customs of British, which are the accumulations of culture and ethnic characteristics of Britain during its long-term development as a senior capitalist country.
