The paper studies the space utilization and placemaking in Chinese square dancing by field trip research, and demonstrates its positive effects to contemporary cities and urban life. The distribution of dancing groups shows their preference for sites, while the similar pattern of space utilization shows their wisdom in the use of various space. By creating pleasant scale, providing comm unity identity and making places for all-age interact!on, the square dancing promotes citizens* awareness for public space, thus activating the negative space in the city.
